Building Community. Changing Lives. Reclaiming Haiti.
Background. Fondasyon Konesans Ak Libète (FOKAL) was created by Haitians in June 1995 to help build a democratic society in Haiti. FOKAL is part of the international network of Open Society Foundations (OSF) created by philanthropist George Soros but strives for independent, diversified funding support. Today FOKAL is a strong Haitian institution, respected for its sound management and capacity to take ethical positions with regards to society’s major challenges. It is known for its unique capacity to act as catalyst and interface on issues such as democracy in fragile urban space, rights of peasants and women, the role of creativity, culture, education and access to information in processes of change.
Mission/Vision. FOKAL is a well recognized Haitian foundation that offers to local communities and civil society organizations a large spectrum of collaborations in the fields of education, information, arts and culture, civic engagement and sustainable development. FOKAL’s resource center serves as meeting ground to foster interaction between trans-generational creative and professional sectors, locally and internationally and to convey the importance of culture, creativity and ethics as motors for democracy building.
