In Port-au Prince waste management is severely under-serviced. Piles of trash commonly lay in the streets and canals, which attract insects and diseases. Trash pick-up is scarce and there are few landfills.
Martissant was no different with trash strewn everywhere. In our meeting with the community, residents felt hopeless with the lack of garbage collection services and expressed strong desires for waste management as a priority. Like you, they wanted a clean neighborhood!
"A clean neighborhood means health and dignity."
FOKAL negotiated a contract with Public Services to pick up trash. Now they are able to pick up over half of the waste production in the neighborhood and FOKAL has trained a network of local volunteers who act as liaisons to Public Services, detect and destroy irregular dumping grounds, identify potential sites for collection and raise neighborhood awareness on these issues. Over 100 neighborhood schools are now thoroughly engaged in the process through trainings, talks, and workshops on recycling.
Now cleanliness and community pride are the first things you notice when you visit Martissant!
