Deforestation leads to terrible erosion of the land. A French Spot XS satellite study put Haiti's forest cover at only 1.25 percent. Deforestation in Haiti was described by one recent U.N. report as ''one of the most degraded countries in the world''.
Reforestation is a priority among the residents of the Martissant community. They see a jewel in the Martissant Park and want that in the surrounding neighborhood as well. In addition to providing shade, trees prevent erosion and mitigate floods.
FOKAL grows saplings in trees nurseries maintained in Martissant Park. We sell the young saplings to neighboring residents who plant the trees throughout the neighborhood for tree cover and to supply fruit.
Yes, we are creating a fruit orchard in Martissant Park. Neighborhood youth learned simple techniques of environmental design and helped plant Caribbean cherry, lemon, corosol, orange and grapefruit trees that will start producing fruit in 2016.
Donate $20 to plant one tree or $200 to plant an orchard.
